Camp Watonka is an USA Archery affiliate and runs the Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) program. Campers progress by scoring 130 points on 6 consecutive rounds of 6 shots at 15 meters; then at 20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 meters. Campers use wooden recurve or basic compound bows at the shorter distances moving to more powerful compound bows at 40 meters. Rainy day activities on the range include "Balloon Pop" and "Tic-tac-toe" with fiberglass bows.
Marksmanship / Trap Shooting / Summer Biathlon
Our rifle program runs solely on the NRA 50ft junior program which highlights safety and the focus needed to score qualifying targets. All campers who wish to take part in the program must attend a required rifle safety period that runs once only at the beginning of each 2-week session. Over the years we have had 92 campers attain the rank of NRA Expert with small bore rifle with 8 Distinguished Experts and 5 Experts in small bore pistol with 1 Distinguished Expert. Fly Fishing and Fly Tying
Campers practice the particular skills needed for fly fishing which uses weighted fly line and almost weightless artificial flies designed to imitate the prey of different fish. Fly fishing technique also varies with habitat and campers get to fish our lake and creek.
