Don and Betty started Camp Watonka in 1963 as they saw a need for the fun of a summer camp combined with a hands-on science program. Don was chairperson of a middle school science program in NJ and very active in Boy Scouts. Betty has held various positions in Girl Scouts as well as being a registered nurse, nurse instructor, school nurse and camp nurse in the early years.
Dave has been at summer camp as a camper and in various leadership positions for most of his life. A graduate of Penn State University, Dave works as a Middle School teacher in Wayne County School Districts. Formerly teaching history and the head soccer coach, he is currently with the gifted studies program at Honesdale High School.
Amy Wacker has been part of Camp Watonka since she married Dave in 1991 after graduating from Penn State University. She holds a degree in Elementary Education K-12 and is currently a primary level reading specialist at Wallenpaupack School District.
Dave Jr has spent his whole life at Summer Camp. Currently he is a student at Millersville University studying to become a Tech Ed teacher. Around camp David can be found teaching rocketry, minibikes and at the waterfront.
Aleaha has grown up at Camp Watonka and is currently in her Freshman year at Westchester University studying Dietetics and Nutrition. She is a certified lifeguard and can often be found working at the lake. In addition she instructs Aquatic biology and assists with the ropes and crafts programs.
Your Science and Management Staff
Neil graduated in Math and Computer Science at Manchester Metropolitan University, England. He started at camp in 1987 as a counselor and electronics instructor, taking on the role of Program Director in 1993. When not at Camp, or at a camp event Neil works in Northern VA as a computer programmer for Family Doctors.
A camp nurse requires a special set of skills and since 1997 we have been fortunate to have Louise bring her calm professionalism to the task of keeping the camp population healthy. Her role includes routine medical care, tracking medications and keeping a routine eye on all aspects of the Camp's operations.
A retired local Tech Ed. teacher, Joe has taught Rifle, Pistol and Trap Shooting at Camp since 1982. Joe is a certified instructor, certified Range Safety Officer and competitive shooter in the off-season earning medals in numerous Keystone Games, NRA Bullseye and International competitions. [+]
Lisa has dedicated her summers to Camp Watonka for 24 years in many diverse areas; but her patience, energy, high-quality instruction and eye for safety have made her our ideal Waterfront Director since 2005. At home in Michigan, Lisa works with special needs and At-Risk students in her local school district. [+]
Here is a person who simply enjoys science, sparks enthusiasm in his students and is highly respected by his science teacher peers winning the Michigan State Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award in 2010. Cris has taught a variety of science at Watonka since 1994 most recently running the earth science and astronomy programs.[+]
David is high school teacher of Robotics, Engineering, 3D Mechanical Drawing, Architecture, Rocketry, and Broadcast Video. David graduated Summa cum laude at California University of Pennsylvania and completed a 2 year robotics training program from Carnegie Mellon University.[+]
Chris brings his unique energy to our chemistry and physics programs. Since completing his M.Ed at Wilkes University (1999), Chris has taught 8th grade science at Wayne Highlands School. Outside of school he is an avid outdoorsman, a hobby he brings to our Campers with fly fishing and fly tying classes.[+]
Marisa is a 2015 graduate of Misericordia University with a degree in Chemistry and Secondary Education. She recently accepted a job at Delaware Valley School District in Milford, PA teaching high school chemistry. Marisa is very passionate about chemistry and making learning fun. [+]
